Business English Corner Offers Insights into South‑African Business Culture

On October 26th, an interesting Business English Corner was held at Miu Er Garden. Foreign teachers regularly invite guest speakers from different regions to share local business customs, and this time two foreign teachers, Cameron and Pedro, hosted the event for students.

It was the first time for many students to take part in such an activity. The class turned out relaxing and energetic, giving participants a great chance to learn new cultures from South Africa.

During the session, Pedro introduced unique South‑African cultures through presentations and group discussions. What impressed students most was his introduction to a special local festival, which brought much amusement to the audience.

Students asked questions and communicated actively with the guest teacher. They picked up many practical tips about the dos and don’ts of doing business in South Africa.

Pedro told the students that South Africa is a multicultural country with 12 official languages. He reminded everyone that when meeting new people, we should ask more questions and avoid labelling others, for every individual is unique. We must respect all local cultures and customs.

Students summed up key business communication points as three dos and three don’ts. Before starting business, communication is essential. Greetings matter a lot, and we should communicate with others from heart to heart. Instead of being lazy, we need to keep learning. Do not shut yourself out just because you are not from South Africa. You will receive warm treatment once you integrate into the group.

Cameron also taught practical business communication skills. He presented a case study about a Chinese supplier selling solar panels to South Africa and inspired a brainstorm. Students chose different roles and carried out role‑plays to solve the company’s real‑world problems. Though this part was challenging, it was highly inspiring and interactive.

Group discussions and role‑plays allowed students to experience real‑life business communication scenarios.

All students enjoyed the wonderful night with teachers and peers. For participants, the Business English Corner was a fresh experience. Everyone kept growing through exchanging different ideas.

This meaningful activity greatly improved students’ business English competence and helped build practical international business awareness.

Many students shared that they could make steady progress each time they join the Business Corner. Even though the event comes to an end, those sweet memories will last forever.
